Default The first secession regiment?

The South Carolina Convention called for a regiment of six-month men. Some called that regiment "Gregg's First Regiment". Some claimed it was the first regiment organized for the secessionists/Confederates in the soon-to-be Civil War.

Confederate Military History (Vol.5, Ch. I) says: "The legislature had passed a bill on December 17th providing for the organization of ten regiments for the defense of the State, and the convention had ordered the formation of a regiment for six months' service, to be embodied at once, the governor to appoint the field officers. This last was "Gregg's First regiment," which was organized in January, 1861, and on duty on Sullivan's and Morris islands by the 1st of February following. The governor appointed Maxcy Gregg, of Columbia, colonel: Col. A. H. Gladden, who had been an officer of the Palmetto regiment in the Mexican war, lieutenant-colonel; and D. H. Hamilton, the late marshal of the United States court in South Carolina, major. ..."

In Confederate Veteran in 1893, George B. Lake. Edgefield, S. C., writes: "I am Treasurer of Abner Perrin Camp, and I offered a resolution, which was adopted, making the VETERAN our official organ. I was in the first regiment organized in the war Gregg's First Regiment, S. C. V. I saw the first gun fired on Fort Sumter, and was continuously in the service. I commanded the company immediately in rear of the four gun battery that was blown up at Petersburg, Va., July 30, 1864, when myself and my thirty four men were buried. Thirty one men were killed by the explosion, and myself and the other three live men were dug out by the enemy after they captured the works. I was sent from there to Fort Delaware, and released first July, 1865, after the war had ended. Gregg's First Regiment, S. C. V. was a six months' regiment. The company I commanded at Petersburg the day of the explosion was of the Twenty second, S. C. V., Co. B."

This regiment is not one of the ten 12-month regiments called for by Governor Gist in November and authorized by the SC legislature in December.

Not counting militia that was known to exist long before this, does anyone have a candidate for the 1st secessionist or Confederate regiment?

Regards,
Tim
