I think the forerunner was Salmon Chase. He had an organization in place and was competeing for the Republican nomination. He had the Radical Republicans behind him and he would've most likely won over the moderates and gotten the nomination if he hadn't stepped on his own ..... self.
Grant was a distinct possiblity. He had pretty much defeated the Rebels out west and he was knockin' at Richmond's door. If he had run as a conservative or moderate Republican, Radicals would've been appeased and the Union Democrats would've made sure he got elected.
I don't think Seward would've thrown his hat in the ring. He was on the outs with both Radical Repbulicans and the Union Democrats.
