JohnW:
All of them.

If a guy claims that thus and such is true, and I can go look at the same records he did, I'll tend to believe him. But if a guy says he sat down with Lee and this is what Lee said, then I have nothing to look at. I may appreciate what he said, I may find it fascinating, but I'm not going to assume that any part of is true.

Just a peculiarity of mine.

Please don't consider this a flyby post without any content but I'm busy on a different post with content. Also I hope this link works, and that I'm not violating anybody's copyright. It's the cover of a book about Buchser for sale at Amazon (Frank Buchser, a Swiss Artist in America by Frank Buchser / William U. Eiland / Rudolph P. Byrd / Georgia Museum of Art). http://www.larrysart.com/books-reviewed/0915977265.html

Sock,

Excellent! It did work. Isn't that an interesting picture of Lee? Flood said that Buchser wanted Lee to wear his uniform, but he refused. He even suggested painting Lee in uniform, then travelling to Washington to paint Grant in uniform, then putting the two together. Lee would have none of it.

Good work on your research. I had even considered scanning the picture from Flood's book, but you solved the problem. Thanks!

Regards,

John W.

It is indeed an excellent portrait.

It is not hard to understand why Lee has so very many admirers.

Yes, he had many admirers (ahem)...general-Lee speaking.

On loan to the Swiss Ambassador in New York City? Are they trying to tell us something?

Can't think what they might be trying to tell us, but I just now noticed what looks like a tall pointed hat on the table beside General Lee. I don't remember ever seeing any other pictures of him with anything like THAT.

Sockknitter:

It's the kind of hat a high-ranking general like Scott would have worn in dress parade. I don't suspect any of the WBTS soon-to-become generals ever wore one.

According to Flood, "In recognition of the past, on the table beside him in the portrait Buchser could arrange the sword, sword belt, sash, and uniform coat he had worn at Appomattox, along with his binoculars and one of his wartime hats. Lee would get them out for him."

An artist, if he has the gift, can capture a man's soul. In Gen. Lee, he had his hands full.
