Matthew and Rob:
It's a bit difficult to tell what Lincoln was personally. According to acquaintences of his youth, he was an agnostic and, worse, he was a mocker. It is conceivable that as he matured he began to develop some positive thoughts on belief. It is equally conceivable that as a politician he had to join with his highly pious constituents in acknowledging belief.
Going to church, with attendant newspeople, has been a requirement for all presidents, living and dead. Whether he was a deist or ingenuously sprinkled his speeches with reference to an almighty is a tough question. I'll vote for a political deist.
