Civil War History - Secession and PoliticsWas it Slavery, or was it States Rights? Perhaps it was the election of Lincoln? What were the real reasons for Southern Secession and what were the political issues in this time of war? Find your answers here in the Secession and Politics Disussion.
Thea? Are you there? I must warn you that some stranger bent on driving me mad has taken over your postings!
After taking twice the normal amount of my blood pressure medication, I am able to reread your generous and kind post above. Thank you for reconfirming my faith that my friends here, and you in particular Thea, while entrenched firmly in your love for the South, its history and its culture, you have always, ALWAYS been fair to me. A pain in the butt and salt in the wound, but a fair pain.
As I am in shock about your comment on DiLarenzo and the Kennedy brothers, I now feel compelled to go back and read some more of Charles Adam's articles (shudder!). I fully and totally agree with you that the source documents, the earlier the better, are the best on which to learn history and intentions (Although I am sure Tommy is baffled by that statement from me when we argue the ICRR!).
And I promise I will do a search on Mr. Dees and come back with my conclusions in the near future to share with you.
As for Halloween, I put a dead Union soldier in my own home-built 'pine box' coffin and waited for the kids to come. Must of all been Southern in their leanings as not one knocked on the door! (And it might have been that the 'dead' soldier looked pretty darn scary!).
Take care Thea and thanks for standing and being true, as you always are.
Sincerely,
Unionblue

Oops! The above post should have been on another thread where Neil asked if I had read the entire article, which, of course, I had done.
Ah Neil, your kind words (pain in the butt, salt in the wound, etc.) make me know that you truly consider me a friend. But don't O.D. on the b.p. meds! We NEED a Midnight sparring partner. Who knows, with all the ills our members have, most of us are up all night anyway.
I would dearly love to join you guys in the middle of the night but my husband would hear me turn on the computer. As it is, with my back, I've been sleeping in the gameroom three levels down for 9 months and he wouldn't know if I went to Taco Bell in the middle of the night!
That article on blacks moving South that Tommy mentioned made the headlines of our local paper today too. Here's a site for it if you missed it.

The article on blacks moving in large numbers to the South spells it out for me. They expect better job opportunities and a better social climate. You can't argue with stats. You can cook 'em, twist 'em, and chart them out of proportion, but you can't argue with them!

PS Is there a number given for how many 'Yankees' have moved down South in recent years?

Lol Neil, you think I'd make stuff up? I ain't that clever. As to how many Yankees move to the South. I can answer that one right off top of my head with computer like accuracy. Too Many. Seriously though, now you mention it, it is a good question. I will see if I can think were to look for the info. Census data is just too hard for me to navigate though. I know the South has the fastest growing Hispanic population. Georgia leading the nation.

Thea,
I knew Neil would catch on to the ploy to drive him mad. I told you we should just tampered with his incense.
I NEVER said you 'made stuff up' at any time during our debates or arguments! Just kidding, old friend, but still the truth just the same. I KNOW you never make stuff up on this board. It's just that its your stuff and not my stuff that you believe!

Neil,
I have tried to find info on how many yankees move south. Sorry no luck. Found some interesting info on migration of birds though. Does that count? Ooooo k...I'm off to bed. Hope you have a great weekend. Weather has been lovely here this week. Hope is same with you.
Good night and take care. I am heading down to southern Ohio to do some more work on my cabin in Meiggs County for the weekend. Will pick it up again on Monday night. Take care of yourself as I may need to check out that edge of the cliff again sometime.
Stand True,

TOO many is precisely right. They don't appreciate our slower pace of life, but they love our lower taxes. They don't like our food but they should do eat it!
If you come here to retire, don't criticize. After all, we didn't ask you to move down here. And I don't hear about anybody retiring NORTH!
As for the Hispanics, yes they are everywhere but they seem very industrious which is nice. Hopefully, they are legal, but I doubt all of them are.

I'll let you in on a little secret, all of us white folk are all 'illegals' if you trace our ancestors back to the begining. But I think we settled down and turned out OK, after first nearly wiping out the original folks, who also immigrated across that temporary land bridge between Asia and Alaska. Maybe nobody 'belongs' here. Maybe you have to win the privilege by surviving.
Deep thoughts from the shallow end of the gene pool.
