Default "At Gettysburg, or What a Girl saw and heard of the Battle"

I just picked up this re-print at the bookstore at the new Vistor's Center. It was a simple but very well written read about the experience of Tillie Pierce, age 16. For this old historian and soldier it was something very different for a change.... the views of a civilian. The introduction states that eighty eyewitness accounts have been written by Gettysburg residents that witnessed the battle. Does anyone know what those books are entitled?

Interesting, but these books seem to have been written by modern authors.... maybe they used some of the original manuscripts from the 80 eyewitness accounts but I wonder if any are available in their original form?

I saw the book, wasn't going to pick it up (who cares what some girl writes about) and then I learned something about her, bought it and enjoyed it. I cited her in my article that will appear in Gettysburg Magazine. There's an article about some boy who was there in another issue of Gettysburg Magazine. That's also cited in the article.

Concerning the other books, I have a couple but perused them first to see whether they would be useful.

Now, concerning the manuscript, see if you can get the book via interlibrary loan. If it's decent, it would cite the source and lead you to the library, historical society or (temporary?) dead end (if it's the family).

Default What A Girl Saw....

This book is available online as an ebook.

You can find it here.

I didn't take the time to read it, but I did bookmark it to get back to when I have time. It looks like a fairly small book.

Thanks, Jules. I've bookmarked it and will get back to it when I have a little time.

I feel your pain, combatvet.

I have quite a few books that I've bought, paid full price for, then found them at yard sales, used book stores, or estate sales, priced at something like fifty cents or a dollar. Grrrrrr. I've so far found three on Gutenberg that I bought....one being the 2 volume set of General J.D. Cox's "Military Reminiscences." I'm not sure you can even buy those anymore....I looked on Amazon one time, wondering if they're still in print, and although they were listed, Amazon didn't actually have any in stock.

And...timewalker...you're very welcome.

Perhaps my best buy was the Monringside Press hardcover reprint of Edward Porter Alexander's Military Memoirs of A Confederate for $15 at a second hand bookshop in Omaha, Nebraska. I didn't have a clue who Alexander was at the time but recognizing the publisher, I knew it had to be good.
