Default North invading the South

Well not quite

Hello,

I'm new to the boards from Ontario Canada and my Father (72) and myself (41) are heading down to Gettysburg for our Canadian longweekend coming up (May 16-19, 2008).

We use to metal detect together years ago but with life's demands and tired of rolling pennies found, we gave up on the hobby together.

My Father wants to still do some Civil War Relic hunting before he gets too old to be able to do it (diabetes) and I would love to be there to see him dig his first minnie from the ground!!!

Only problem is that we don't know of any places around Gettysburg where we can metal detect without getting arrested!

Anyone on this forum would be so kind to take us out and show us somewhere where we could metal detect for some Civil War relics this upcoming weekend?

We would like to take you out for supper (on us) in return and talk about our passion for history together.

Thank-you,
Brian & Bill Thomson

Default Relic Hunting

Hopefully you can find someone that knows their stuff vis a vis: relic hunting.

Be extraordinarily careful,as the Park Service is totally intolerant to relic hunters.(As well they should be).

(I know you are NOT saying your going to relic hunt Gettysburg NMP...,just be careful.)

I understand the best relic hunting is done in areas that the armies would occupy for months. Much more so than fluid campaigns such as Gettysburg.

A friend once dragged me out to relic hunt, and he went to campsites and other unprotected battlefields in Virginia. It was great fun and successful. In those cases you have to seek out the property owner and ask pemission, but thats another discussion.

Good Luck,

VS

If you find a cannon ball get the hell away from it. A man recently became the last casualty of the rebellion. He was killed when a Civil War cannon ball that he had discovered exploded.

Default Be Careful

Canadians found with mine detectors at the Gettysburg military park are executed.

Kidding. But you could find yourself in a detention center and get deported to Mexico.

It's short notice, but I'm sure there is at least one Canadian born U.S. soldier buried at Gettyburg. Thousands served in the Union army. The Gettysburg guide service might know.

Thanks guys for your warnings (that's why I'm seeking someone out to show us where it's safe ie: private property).

I could always wear my red mountie uniform and if caught play the dumb Canadian looking for my long lost war of 1812 great grandfather and when confronted this is the Civil War site not a 1812 site then I'd just give that glazed look to them

Anyone know of someone who could help us out (weekend is approahing fast here)

Brian
