In Trudeau's Gettysburg: A Testing of Courage, it is said that Reynolds viewed that "no one can conduct a campaign at a distance from the field or without being in the presence of operating armies." He viewed any sort of involvement by Washington as interference.

During the beginnings of the Gettysburg Campaign in June 1863, Reynolds was in Washington meeting with Lincoln. Reynolds believed that Lincoln wasn't seeking to drop General Hooker at that point, but that he was invited to state his conditions for taking over the Army of the Potomac.

As far as Reynolds missing out on glory, Meade won glory by making a series of good decisions, including improvising to stop Longstreet's assault on July 2nd. Can we assume that Reynolds would have done as well as Meade?

Don't know enough about Reynolds to respond to that, Matthew. But as both of them were capable, I'd expect Reynolds to have reacted pretty much as Meade did.

Dear List Members;

I would list these Generals who "Lost Out on Glory:"

General Reynolds
General JNO Buford
General Wadsworth
General Robinson
General Stannard
General Newton
General Thomas

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
M. E. Wolf
