Civil War History - Gettysburg ForumGettysburg! It's not just a National Park. It's a Civil War Battlefield. For some it's historic and storied past are almost an obsession! All related discussions are welcome here!
Ole, you're bringing this to life! Thanks. Please keep it up. It looks (from the July 3 mapping) that gg grandpa's 48th VA was in at least the second tier of the invading troops. That might account for my ability to discuss this at this point in time.
Thank you, Larry. I'll read another hour (from Pfanz, Rad) after mowing and before my nap and report on the night and morning of the 2nd and 3rd days.
I can only cover what Pfanz wrote. There are certainly more stories out there with greater detail. To them, I would appeal -- hep!
Greene and his brigade are certainly unsung heroes in this location. If Johnson had driven the yanks off that hill, can you imagine how history would be changed? For sure, the yanks would have taken it back, but the entire third day would have been something else.
By the way, in going back through Pfanz, I note that Alpheus Williams voted to stay and fight one more day (this was at Meade's conference at the end of the second day) because, after that, they would have to go half rations and that depending on the countryside. Where was Meade's supply line?
It is also interesting to note that Meade, Slocum, and Williams had no idea about what was going on at Culp's Hill. Meade didn't know that Slocum considered himself in charge of a "wing" and that Williams was in temporary command of the XII Corps. Slocum and Williams did not know that Meade didn't know. The "fog of war" applies quite aptly here.

I hope this discussion cranks up. I had a gg grandfather there, Pvt. John Calvin Rouse with the 48th VA CSA. He later received an honorable discharge from the US Army. Go figure.
Very pleased to see this thread. My gr-gr-gr-uncle Jerome Bonaparte Davis served with the 50th Virginia "The Bloody Half-Hundred".

John W., glad to see you are back among us! GG Grandpa Rouse was still with the 48th VA during Gettysburg, but went home to Virginia, stayed the winter with his young family in Bristol and took off for the 3rd North Carolina US from which he received an honorable discharge in 1865. His brother was a sergeant under Gen. Stoneman in Knoxville. I guess a paycheck and a chance to help his family was something he couldn't refuse. After two long years he had probably given the Confederacy it's due.
Yeah! John W. We were just wondering where you've been.
Larry: Have been otherwise occupied so haven't gotten back to Culp's Hill, the next day. Spent yesterday inside the range, conjuring why the speed bake feature wasn't functioning. Crawling about on all fours tends to wreak havoc on this old bod so I laid about grumbling all day. Will get back on it soon.

........."At a distance of about a mile to the north east under JOHNSON'S (CSA) command were five Louisiana regiments under Williams, six Virginia regiments under Grumble Jones "
With respect, this was General John M. Jones, not William "Grumble" Jones.
Respectfully,
John W.

Ole, Larry, I've missed you folks. I think I may have seen Charles pop in earlier. I needed a cooling off period, as things were getting a little rough around here, plus I've been under the weather healthwise for a while. I'm better, and ready to fall in again!
Regards,
John W.

Sorry about the health thing. Sometimes **** happens, I get a brush now and then, but I suspect that I'm going to plague your sorry butt for about 30 years. If I'm mistaken, you may send regrets to Dear One who will very likely wonder why anyone ever took me seriously.

Gents at what point did the Stonewall Brigade & Iron Brigade face off on Culps Hill? One of those questions I should know the answer for but can neither seem to recall the answer or find the right book w/ enough info on the hill to be useful.

Please pardon my confusion of the Jones boys. Ain't nobody ever called me a scholar more than once. Thanks for the catch, John W. At least someone is reading my mistakes!
