Many thanks for the post, Gary. I've always wondered why there are rocks in this pasture and none in the next.

Gary, thanks very much for the link which was and is quite interesting. My wife's gg grandfather J.R. Whaley of the 51st Georgia was captured there on July 3, 1863. After that he "vacationed" at Ft. Delaware until war's end.
I'm not sure I'm following here. So, the rocks pictured in the photo are there due to the volcanic activity that also eventually formed the rocks at Devils Den, and other parts of the eastern US? Is that the main jist? Sorry, I'm a bit foggy this morning, as usual.

And is that the photographers dog tied to that rock? Is that rock part of the formation? It almost looks like a monument stone. Is that dog actually a rock that was formed from the volcanic activity? How 'bout the leash?

Better late than never, Terry. The picture Gary referred to is different than the one you are talking about. Seems that the site changes the featured picture daily.

Go to 'Archive' on Gary's link for 2 July to get Devil's Den. Although today's offering- Bloody Bluff- is exceedingly interesting itself- it being the eminence from which Minuteman musketeers took potshots at the British regulars trying to get through Lexington that fateful day in April 1775- a repulse that contributed to that long bloody march back to the safety of Boston, minus a good many Redcoats.

For some reason I had always thought that the tumble of boulders at Devil's Den was a glacial formation, but apparently not- the icepack of the late Ice Age did not reach that far south into that region of Pennsylvania. I'm going to keep looking on this.

I believe I've read that the rocks were part of the pre-Cambrian shield exposed here and there in the upper states.
