Record breaking rainfall and recent flash flooding since Sunday have necessitated the re-scheduling of this weekend's Gettysburg Reenactment. Despite obvious disappointment, inconvenience and scheduling difficult ties, the only prudent and responsible decision was to postpone the event. The event has been rescheduled at the Redding Farm next week on July 7, 8, & 9. Tickets from July 1, 2, & 3 will be honored for any day of the rescheduled event.
Boy, that is going to cause some major re-scheduling problems for both reenactors and tourists. The fields that were supposed to be used for parking are now marshes and we are still under flash flood warnings. Harrisburg and Lancaster county are both under a declared state of emergency with the Susquehana expected to rise more than 8 feet above flood level today. City Island has been evacuated as have several lower areas in central and south central PA.
I just called the NPS office and was told that all the ranger walks are still on schedule for the weekend. For me, that is the best part of the event schedule.
Tom, my wife said it was her understanding that the weekend of July 7-9 is the weekend when the Harley motorcyclists are scheduled to have their annual get-together in Gettysburg.
Is that true? Are both events going to be going on at the same time?
Yup, that is the closing weekend for Bike Week. How's that for a strange juxtaposition of cultures <grin>. Maybe this year Marse Robert can watch PPT's assault from the back of a "hog" and give Traveller the day off.
Later,

(BTW: If anybody is planning to attend either weekend drop me an email at tomh@baymediapro.com and we can get together to put some faces to the names.)
The turnout for the reenactment (both reenactors and spectators) was well below anticipated numbers, but I don't think the bike week participants were the cause. They rescheduled the event four days before the scheduled start, some of the reenactors were already on their way and many were simply unable to change their schedules. For the visitors, trying to get a hotel room in town with a week's notice is nearly impossible, so rescheduling their trip wasn't easy. The crowds that attended the ranger walks on the originally scheduled weekend were very large, so it seems that more than a few spectators decided to come to town anyway and enjoy the other scheduled events.
The bike week turnout was the largest yet, turning most of downtown into a parking lot. Traffic was so bad that the tour buses and LBG tours decided to stop operations on Saturday afternoon, a decision that was decidedly unpopular. The larger crowd also meant that there were a record number of arrests for the event, with the two most talked about instances being a group fight at a local pub/restaraunt and a female flasher at O'Rourke's on Steinweir.
Many of the locals agree that the mistake was in rescheduling for the next weekend and not giving the reenactors and spectators sufficient time to make new plans. The last time that there was a severe weather postponment the event was rescheduled more than a month later and the turnout was spectacular.
