Question Captured Union Colors

I had consolidated a considerable list of captured Confederate banners taken throughout the battle of Gettysburg. However, I lack information about Union ones. Does anyone out there have a list or know where I can find them?

Intrigued by your question I did some cursory looking and found no such list. You may have set in motion an interesting research project if in fact there is no such list. I would think that if Pfanz and others was gone through page by page the info could be found. I will tonight skim my OR to see if any Confederate reports mention anything. I did find a reference to General Ramseur's report in which he says that his brigade catured the colors of the 150th Pa.

Could not wait and went on the internet - both Lee's and Longstreet's reports say two regimental colors were captured in Longstreet's Assault on July 2th but do not identify them. Lee's report also says "several colors were captured" on July 1st and that "four stand of colors" were captured during the attack on Cemetary Hill late on July 2nd.

Default Colors

There is an excellent book about CONFEDERATE colors that fell into Union hands during the Pennsylvania Campaign. Its called "The ****ed red Flags of the rebellion..." (there is a little more to the title...and I cannot remember what it is ort he author's name)..because Im stuck at work.

I highly reccomend this book. Its about 5-7 years old. Hopefully you can find it, it may be due for an updated edition soon...but I havent heard that that is in the works.

Federal colors that fell into Confederate hands: I have only have heard that the 16th Maine Infantry tore up their colors and passed the remants amongst the men when forced to surrender on the 1st day. I suppose it is not considered as captured.

Hopefully someone will know more.

VS..etc

I left the cites at home but so far |I have found:

150 Pennsylvania
149 Pennsylvania

157 New York

These were found either in one of Pfanz' books or the OR or both.

In his report in the OR the Lt. Colonel of the 3rd Maine says that they lost their "national colors"

I can't seem to let it drop. Independently, I stumbled the site cited by VaCav.

If you add noframes;read=1468-9k to his address you will see that your exact question was raised there several years ago.

It does shed some light on the subject, Condon, but not enough. Some flags were returned after capitals were sacked by Sherman or in Richmond, but some were either destroyed or taken home as momentos. Buit, there was no answer, that I could see, about flags taken at Gettysburg
