As you probably know John Bell Hood was a division commander at Gettysburg and had the troops in Robertson's brigade under his command on the 2nd of Jul in particular. Looking at the mapping for that day, Robertson was in command of the 3rd Arkansas, 1st Texas, 4th Texas and 5th Texas Regiments, reading from left to right flank. Law's Alabama brigade was immediately to the south. Anderson's Georgia brigade was to Robertson's left rear and Benning's Georgia brigade to Robertson's right rear. To the north was McLaws's Division including Kershaw and Semmes brigates from South Carolina and Georgia respectively were to the north on Robertson's left. Robertson would have been on the south end of the Devil's den near the Little Roundtop. I believe McLaws' troops were in the central fight at the Devil's Den. Robertson was have had Kershaw on his left as they advanced. On the mapping of the 3rd of Jul Robertson's Texans were in line with the Law's Alabama brigade advancing on the Little Roundtop. This was the southern end of the Confederate line. At that date John Bell Hood was an eager young commander, always ready to fight. Severe wounds later would greatly impact his effectiveness and spoil much of his place in history. The Atlanta campaign of which he was an integral though not very great part was to began the following spring. |
