Anybody have a breakdown on the losses each side incurred for each day of fighting at Gettysburg? Thanks.

Trying to figure if Day 3 with Pickett's charge was the bloodiest of all three days. If it was, does it exceed the other two days combined?

Gary:

I believe the totals for the first two days were 18000 Federal casualties, including 3000 prisoners. Combined Confederate casualties for both days were about 16000. If you do the math that leaves 5000 Federal casualties on day three, and possible up to 12,000 Confederate casualties, although those figures seem high to me for day three. I don't know where all the Confederate casualties came from though. I think Picketts charge accounted for about 6000. Most reports list total Federal casualties at 23,000 and Confederate casualties at 28,000 over the three days. Anyone have any more accurate stats on this?

Actually I'm fairly certain the second day was the deadliest w/ the fighting around Culps hill in the AM and Longstreets Assault on Sickles in the afternoon. The fighting on the Union Left was a regular rloodbath w/ Sicles Corps taking it on the chin after he moved out of line, thougfh in all honesty he gave as good as he got...

The irony to me is that everyone knows and all but idolizes Gettysburg... but as battles go it really was quite insignificant when compared to scraps like Chicamaugua & Franklin. THe western affairs were just so much more bloody. Blame it on the media! Weren't any big newsies out west.

Shane:
There were a total of 18000 casualties on the second day of fighting. 9000 on each side.
