Civil War History - Gettysburg ForumGettysburg! It's not just a National Park. It's a Civil War Battlefield. For some it's historic and storied past are almost an obsession! All related discussions are welcome here!
Here's a really interesting & good question: "Do you believe that Gettysburg is haunted & do you believe in ghosts?" For me I have my doubts if any ghost exist or not, but if I were to walk around the battlefield at night I would look into the matter.
I hope that one day my question will be answered! I also wish I lived in Gettysburg!
I personally have never seen anything. On any hollowed ground be it Gettysburg, or any other place .. but I have felt cold spots in the middle of july or have had feeling of sadness or a feeling of peace and calmness ..
If there is such a thing as ghost hopefully one of these day on one of my Civil War traveling trips I will experience such an encounter

No, I don't believe in ghosts, which means I don't believe Gettysburg - or anyplace else, for that matter - is haunted.
That said, I will mention that there are "ghost tours" available in Gettysburg, at least at certain times of year, if not all year round. A guide takes you on a walk and tells stories about supernatural phenomena that supposedly have been experienced in the area.
I went on such a tour once, and found it an interesting evening's diversion, even though I didn't believe a word of the stories. For those who are more inclined to believe in such things, you might find the tours even more interesting than I did.
There was a time that I did not in any way, shape nor form belive in ghosts, spirits, haints, shades ect.
However some years ago before my beloved grandfather and grandmother passed away, my attitude and beliefs changed. We were visiting the cemetery
where my great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and other family members are buried. This was just a little country semetery in central Virginia
as like of unlike as any.
It was only the 3 living souls in that cemetery that day, my folks and I. It was the habit to clean the tombstones of our loved ones weed the lot and leave fresh flowers on there graves. After all this was done my grandpop had me photograph the graves ect. so that he could take the photos home to show to his invalided sister who was almost 100 and could no longer pay her respects to her family.
I snapped two photos with a Polaroid 500 instant camera. As I returned to our car about 30 yards from the gravesites, I heard the sound on the old gravel walk and in the dried leaves the sound of footsteps. Iturned several times to look but could see nothing of no one. As I got into the car with my folks I handed to My grandma the two photos that had just finished developing. She
asked as we pulled out of the churchyard who this person was in one of the photos. As I stopped to look at the photo, I was stunned to see the hazy image of a person at a tombstone just beyond and to the left of my greatgrand-ma's. The image was of a dark haired person casually posed just
behind the stone, posed and smiling. I still have this photo and in 20 odd years the image of the person who wasn't there still si.
Since then I've seen and heard a few thing I cannot understand...many in Gettysburg...some witnessed by others than myself. I have only a few stories
but they are good ones.
OK, I believe in ghosts. Haven't had anything at Gettysburg. However, at Fort Friend (stop #2 @ Petersburg), there is a partially recreated magazine which we filmed. Didn't think anything special until we viewed the footage that we could see, but Darth Vader (some breathing) was in the soundtrack.
Tough question..... No, I cannot say that I believe in ghosts. I have lived here all my life, and have spent a fair amount of time out on the field at night.... Even though I cannot accustom my mind to the very idea of ghosts, I have had strange things happen, smelled and heard things I cannot explain.
