Does anyone know the name of the statue atop the NY State monument at Gettysburg?

I know the one atop the PA monument is "Winged Victory", and the one atop the Soldiers National is "The Genius of Liberty".

Hopefully someone has the answer, I can't find it.

I know there are a lot of monuments to individual New York regiments. Off the top of my head, I can't place the monument that would be devoted to the entire state.

Can you give me an idea where it's located?

The New York State Monument is located in the National Cemetery. Here is a link where you can check it out:

Hope that helps.

I can't tell whether the statue at the top is supposed to be the same woman depicted on the New York State seal.

Even if it is, I'm not sure what the name would be. The state seal bears the one-word legend "Excelsior," but that is the state motto - I don't think it's the woman's name.

If I find out anything more, I'll let you know.

Sounds good to me, thanks for the help.

While I'm at it, does anyone know the date for the dedication of the GAR monument on Hancock Ave at Gettysburg?

The 2 women who appear on the NY State flag are Justice and the Goddess Liberty. Looking at the photos of the moument, I'm not really sure if the statue on top is a rendition of Liberty or not. Judging by the fact that she's holding a victor's laurel in her outstretched arm, I would guess she's a personification of victory or triumph, although that's only a guess. Unfortunately, the only book I own which has a listing of dates and descriptions of the monuments is "on loan" (interpret as LOST) to a friend. I'll keep looking though!! (You've aroused my curiousity now!)

Here's some new info on the New York State Monument. I found this excerpt from the Redshaw's Raiders web site: http://www.fourscore.org/index.htm

Image from CivilWarTalk.com "Gettysburg in Pictures"

"This monument has been the focus of considerable work during the summer of 1997. As of this date, all bronzework up to the 45-foot level has been cleaned and waxed. The granite components below the 45-foot level were washed. This work was accomplished with the aid of a rented hydraulic manlift. The remainder of the monument is scheduled for work September 1997, but will not include major masonry work which has not been scheduled. The decision regarding replacement of the bronze staff will be made when the equipment is in place to allow examination of the "Victory" statue at the top. A bronze statue on the top represents one of two figures in the state seal, and symbolizes the state of New York mourning its fallen men. A portion of the staff the statue holds has broken off and with it, a bronze Liberty Cap that surmounted it."

Redshaw is a PA State Congressman who is raising money to fix monuments at Gettysburg.

I guess that answers the "Lady Victory" question.
