Civil War History - Gettysburg ForumGettysburg! It's not just a National Park. It's a Civil War Battlefield. For some it's historic and storied past are almost an obsession! All related discussions are welcome here!
I've been going to Gettysburg for more than 10 years now, and I just love the Peach Orchard area, it's a great place to feel the size of the battlefield, and appreciate the magnitude of the battle fought there.
It's a tough call. I've always been intrigued by a study of the flanks, meaning LRT and Culp's Hill. But I also enjoy the feeling of solitude when visiting battlefields and that brings to mind the "wheatfield" at Gettysburg. I've had that place to myself on many occasion and it is just a nice area to relax and reflect. Of course, some pics...
These are of Winslow's Battery D, 1st NY Artillery.
Donīt know if it sounds odd, but any place on the battlefield is perfect to visit at dusk, in time when the crowds are gone and sit at the McDonalds. Then, when you have the chance to be there alone there is such a strong feeling around. Canīt describe it better. Iīve been twice to Gettysburg and had always the same experience. Above all the good places there is one I like most and thatīs the spot where Gen Reynolds fell.

THAT is a spooky spot, Steve! oooooooo(ghostly sounds)ooooo
Try Spangler's Spring down on Culp's Hill. Chilly.
A spot that gives me chills is the trees around the Virginia monument. I have at times felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Btw, your English is excellent! Wir kommen noch zusammen. (Did I spell it right?)
Devil's Den is about my most favorite spot on the battlefield. You can see so much from that area and still wonder at the courage and bravery of both sides to fight in such an area!

Being that my favorite unit is the 137th New York my favorite spot has to be Culps Hill. Not taking anything away from the troops on Little round top but many agree Culps Hill is where the real fighting was on the second day.
Whenever i go there I head to the 137ths area 100 or so feet to the right of the monument. It is there that the 137th did the exact same thing as the 20th Maine.Would be nice to see Culps Hill get more attention than it gets.

Undoubtedly..Oak Ridge...where my "pseudo-adopted brigade"Iverson's Brigade was virtually annihilated. 65% casualties in like 50 minutes..OUCH..And no, I do not believe Iverson was drunk. I'm writing a booklet on this part of the battle so its therefore my fave.

I enjoy the battlefield first thing in the morning (600am-ish) prior to cars hitting the park in force. The absence of the cars and the crowds allows one to really become close to the battlefield. It is very peacefull to visit Little Roundtop and take in the view of the Battlefield from there. Culp's Hill offers some interesting terrain to hike over. It was after a Park Ranger tour that I became interested in Culp's Hill which led me to read up on the fighting there. The Wheatfield, Devils Den, and the Slaughter Pen all are interesting areas to visit.I would like to spend more time on the first days fighting and learn about that portion of the park. But, after every trip to the battlefield, I always walk away with the greatest respect for those who fought there, no matter what part of the battle nor a specific day.
