Default Annex!

Check out the interplay of Grant's attempt to annex/impose a protectorate over the Dominican Republic.
I did and it turns out to one of the issues that started the decline of the Radical Republicans. It split the friendship between Sen. Sumner and Fredrick Douglas and bought retribution upon Sen. Sumner from Pres. Grant.

Pres' Grant wanted Dominican Rep. so the government could ship the freed slaves there so the freed slaves could avoid white retribution..

Sen. Sumner R-MA. though Freed slaves and the southern whites should live together and the government should enforce it with force if needed.

Sen. Shurz R-MO. thought the annexation of Dominican Rep. would bring more problems then it would solve. Plus he argue once we took over one island the other islands would soon follow again bring more bad then good. He was being disingenuous for he wanted the U.S. to go after the lands in Canada.

I argue again the remnants of slavery hailed us back from expansion for I agree once we took over one Island then why not the rest.

How do you reconcile that with the results of the Spanish American War where the US takes the Phillipines, Cuba, Guam and Puerto Rico?

I admit Manifest Destiny was dead by 1899 and our nation wanted to join the other world powers and became a colonial power. We were like Germany and join the colonial power game late so there was not much of the world left to grab so we took Spain's few processions.

Grant's grand idea for Dominican Rep. was the last victim of Slavery fights of the 1850's.

Default Sorry

You know when I read the initial post I read that 'Manifest Destiny' was a 'casualty' of slavery and not a causality of slavery. TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MEANINGS.
