Fossil that I am, I attended school back in the day when kids still did "memory work," including learning poems by heart. "Nancy Hanks" was one that we learned in third grade, along with the following:

A Reply To Nancy Hanks

Yes, Nancy Hanks,
The news we will tell
Of your Abe
Whom you loved so well.
You asked first,
"Where's my son?"
He lives in the heart
Of everyone.

- Julius Silberger

(Thanks to http://www.dw-jotd.com/ for the text!)

I can hardly believe it! And you still remember it?

Larry, while your post should be a most perfect ending to the thread, I will spoil it by saying that I had meant to ask what complicated "#rd cousin removed" or whatever does that make you to Old Abe?

I recently found something in Wikipedia that suggests that I am a distant relative of Robert E. Lee, but we all know Wikipedia can't be trusted.

Sam, I remembered it only imperfectly until I did a Google search.

Gotta love my grade school teachers. Many of them started teaching in one-room schools. They didn't spare the rod!

Blue: Spect you're talking about that 3/8" dowel/pointer which was easily broken. But, if applied judiciously, stung something fierce!

An excellent set of photos, Terry. About that foundation -- about 12 x 12? Today one person can't live in a 12 x 12 room! Cook, eat, sleep and keep track of the menfolks. There might have been a loft for the young 'uns, but there still must have been something approximating a 3/4 size double-bed taking up a good piece of that space. Where do you put the dresser? Where do you hang your clothes? Ohmagawd! Not enough electrical outlets to operate the entertainment center.

No wonder reenactors have so much fun.

Yeah Ole I've been up there. Looked all over for where the cable came in through the wall. Couldn't find it to save my life. Was probably further up the wall where the loft was. Better place for a TV anyway.

I'll definitely refrain from answering that one, but I assume it was in the normal fashion? As for me, I'm not related to the rascal at all. My "uncle" married a relative of Abe's. I can claim a link to Washington (8th cousin), but that's about it. My little Grandson, Camden, can tack on Robert E. Lee and William Henry Harrison, his fourth cousins (few times removed).

Well, Larry, by "ugly cuss", I didn't mean to suggest you must be related
