Default Pre war property seizure question.

Click on the link to read about primers and cartridges destined for Charleston that were seized in New York.

What's the legal basis for the seizure? Granted, So' 'Clina had already seceded in Jan. '61, but war didn't start until April.

Having armed bodies of men in the field to oppose the government is treason. The weapons were seized as suspected contraband to be used in treasonous activities.

Couldn't get it to open for me, but will guess. Interfering with the shipment may not have been legal, but it was certainly shown to be a good idea.

Finally made it work. The police superintendant did press the legal envelope considerably, in today's understanding -- where was the probable cause for search and siezure? (Were his agents given a heads up?)

Do you suppose that the Superintendant knew of Lamar's involvement in this affair and in the Wanderer?

The quantity doesn't seem designed to arm a great many troops. And how many Sharps were there in SC anyway? Perhaps this was a partial shipment?
