The harsh things that Lincoln and the North did(suspending habeas corpus, political arrests) really are worthy of discussion, with a lot of relevance for today.

However this guy is an utter burk. It's not only that Davis resorted to many of the same things Northerners did(its a war, not a pillow fight), its the whole golden age crap that people peddle. The awesome 60s, man. The clean cut 50s, the greatest generation 40s, and character building 30s(we made our own fun, walking to school 3 miles thorough the snow).

I read a book last month, "See Here Private Hargrove" written in 1940-41. The author quotes some newspaper editorials. Apparently the draftees just didn't have the guts, patriotism and character of an early generation.

They just went on to WIN WORLD WAR II!

And so it goes. Ah the golden 1850s, where sturdy white men didn't need no dang gum guvmint. Excuse me while I beat this slave and sell his children, send some other 12 year olds to work in a coal mine, and tell my daughter to put down that book, cause readin' might make her unfeminine. Believe it or not, this very same diatribe is in "Huckeberry Finn" in the mouth of a character who was, wait for it: a total git.

What's wrong with the South rising again? Maybe this time we can rid ourselves of the carpetbaggers? Time for another taco.

Best wash that taco down with a liberal dose of an adult beverage, Larry. You're only just now getting to the point where you can do without the carpetbagging auto plants.

Default Another Vain Attempt

to grasp victory from the jaws of defeat.

In the end, the Confederate army got licked pretty good. And that fact is like taking a spoonful of castor oil, of old times.

Matthew...I find the "golden 1850s" quote really out of text. Its the old liberal argument. Hate to break it to you, but this country was built by white men with guns. As I travel the country, I find much of what the author of that article remains true. But what do I know right? Im no professor. I live in the trenches and the mood is relevant to the writing.

Dear Custersluck,

No argument with the glorious gunning down of buffalo, bears and Indians. But would you want to go back to the 1850s? I'm not talking about lack of refridgeration or dental care, but would you find the attitude and behavior towards African Americans or women acceptable? I doubt it. My point is there is no "golden age." How could an African American, or any woman think, good times...

I'm not Dr. Pangloss, I don't think this is a golden age either. But gee whiz, we got some things right.
