"You have to be able to sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic or Dixie. With equal enthusiasm."
The DangYankees 'round these parts didn't / don't put up with no Dixie. You sang / sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic or else.
Southern minded folks are still stingin' from the arsewhoopin' and they don't like havin' their noses rubbed in it, but Blunt's Home Guard are out in force. Don't think they're not.
In my opinion, one of the worst characters in Union service was a native southerner, Colonel George Washington Kirk of the 3rd NC Mounted Infantry Regiment. To be fair to Kirk, he was an excellent guerilla fighter, and led his troops admirably. However, some of the tactics employed would be questionable. For example, after he captured Camp Vance, he had taken prisoners, (he lied, and told them that they were to be paroled) he used them as human shields when the Confederate authorities attempted to give chase as Kirk was returning towards Knoxville.
Although Kirk himself cannot be positively tied in to cases of murder and pillage, his troops had certainly excelled in looting, with more than their share of murders committed along the way.
Having said this about Col. Kirk, his antagonist in the 64th NC Infantry (CS) Col. Keith Allen was just as brutal as his troops proved during the "Shelton Laurel Massacre".
Dude, Osceola. Mo. can not even be compared to Lawrence, Ks.. You are misrepresenting history. How dare you!
There were several other incidents along the way... ...a few of the more notable-
Camp Jackson Massacre (St. Louis, May 1861)....28 killed, 100 wounded (men, women and children)
Osceola, Mo* (23 Sept 1861)............................9 executed
Palmyra, Mo (18 Oct 1862)..............................10 executed
Kansas City Jail Collapse** (13 Aug 1863)............5 killed (incuding a 14 year-old girl), 1 injured (10 year-old girl; legs crushed)
*The sacking and burning of Osceola was by Kansas Jayhawkers (Redlegs etc) led by U.S. Senator Jim Lane. Lane "visited" several other communities along his route through Missouri...probably inflicting similar treatment.
**11 women and children held in prison as hostages.

"Your New-York bankers and merchants are shrewd people, but I never gave them credit for so much sagacity as when they took the Government Loan. It was not merely patriotism, it was a high stroke of policy. It has saved the Government, and what they will regard as equally important, saved them from a great financial disaster."

You must live in a whole different part of Missouri than I visited... Saw plenty of CS flags and heard plenty of Dixie.

Yeah but thats because it's Redneck chic to have a CBF flying. Half of em wouldn't know who J.O Shelby was if he whacked with a knotted plow line. And they think General Lee is that really cool car the Duke boys drive.

They just do it as an in your face thing.
Once again, Borderruffian hits the nail on the head.
I swear to you all, I was in a parade earlier this summer in Centralia, Missouri. Me and the boys were ridin' our horses in support of the SCV Sercey Camp's entry. There was about 15 or 20 of us with a stage coach and a wagon full of old men. I bet I asked 150 people if they knew Joe Shelby. Only One, a highway patrolman guarding an intersection acknowledged in the affirmative. Not one of the sheeple said they did. It made me sick.

Many of us don't.

You are an odd one, Larry. As is John (although he is a bunch odder). Y'all can and do read. You're the exception to borderruffian's brilliant, "in your face" comment.
