Fieldinghurst:
I'm aware there was a Purdy, somewhere west of Pittsburg Landing. Have not been able to find it on a map. Could you place it, for me, on a map? We're not talking Selmer, are we? What crossroads in today's Tennessee, qualifies as Purdy? And is it the same place where the Purdy road went?

Purdy road appears to head northwest of Shiloh.
The town is located almost due west of Savannah approx 16miles, with Adamsville in the middle.
Found it in the Official Military Atlas, plate 78, #3(upper right hand corner of plate).
Its also show in the West Point Atlas for the American Civil War, maps 4 and 15
Purdy, TN is alive and well, what there is of it. Go to Mapquest.com/ and do a simple search for Purdy TN. Zoom in a bit and you'll get street names as well as aerial photography. Yep, still in McNairy County, former home of Sheriff Bufford Pusser.

As I see it, war crimes seemed to have a southern flavor to them.
There was that slaughtering of folks in that town in Mo. by the southern raiders (cavalry).
There was that fort in Tenn. where Gen. Forrest cavalry slaughtered the black prisoners.
In Va. in the crater when the union forces went into the hole instead of around it and were trap. Most of the union soldiers were black and again were helpless and slaughter by southern forces.
The famous war crimes seem to have a southern flavor to them.
In all wars there are war crimes on all side just hope the side you are on is the winning side for your chances of being brought to justice is slim.
Looked it up in DeLorme and it looks like you can't get there from here short of an ATV. Looks like there wouldn't have been a road named for it if it handn't been the heart of the "Nation."
Interesting article Fielding. I did notice that it said nothing about a possible provocation for Hurst's activities. Of course, he might have been mean and vindictive all his life, but it would seem that being thrown in jail for months for speechifying and voting the wrong way might tend to get the red eye open.
I wonder: was Hurst as wealthy as, say, Hampton of Cobb?

And in this, 5fish, I can sympathize with the SCV's campaign to "set the record straight." Unfortunately, I haven't seen where it has come up with the equivalent of Lawrence, Kansas. But, if there was one, I'd give it serious consideration.
It wasn't only the Reb who got a little carried away in the heat of battle (Lawrence excepted). Unfortunately, the historical examples we have make it look that way.

What are you talkin' about ole? Ain't you ever heard of Osceola, Missouri? US Senator Jim Lane and his wild-eyed JayHawkers burned the enitre town to the ground in the summer of 1861. They carted off more'n $1,000,000 dollars worth of loot and took it straight back too Lawrence, Kansas.
What modern day reconstructionists refuse to admit is that Union forces instigated these autrocities against civilians. Oh you all are quick to point out the few instances of Southern boys raisin' a little hell, but you continually ignore, whitewash, cover up and expunge from the Offical Record any/all evidence of Northern boys doin' the same.
Lawrence, Kansas was in retribution for numerous and more outrageous autrocities committed by Northern / Union men and we hadn't ought to EVER forget it.
I'll notice that Lane didn't murder every male in town. \
And, while is possible that whitewash and coverups likely exist, it is not likely that the records turned up missing or "expunged." Unless you have some proof of that, it really comes off as a dumb excuse for not finding proof. Are there no research historians on your side?

Dude, Osceola. Mo. can not even be compared to Lawrence, Ks.. You are misrepresenting history. How dare you!

My friend, you appear to be another who has spent little or perhaps no time studying the events at Ft. Pillow. Welcome aboard. Such is the fuel that fires Southern souls.
