I think the average person would associate Dixie as the one song that makes them think of the South and/or Confederacy when they hear the tune. Most are likely unfamiliar with other contenders.

I recently watched the movie 'Glory'. One scene shows the 54th in camp with musicians playing The Bonnie Blue Flag. Is this an error on the part of the film makers or was the song popular in the north. Presumably with different lyrics.
The tune is an Irish song called "The Irish Jaunting Car," which existed long before the flag or its eponymous song. I'll have to watch the show again... that's not something I would miss!
I posted this somewhere in the Book and movie section:
"I then remembered that while watching 'Glory' as the Negro troops entered someplace there was a street side band playing that song and I wondered then if it was an ironic statement from the musicians. Seems to be a staple of every CW movie."
So as I remember it, the song was not played in camp, but as the 54th was marching thru a southern town somewhere, and local musicians were playing it, along side of the road, perhaps tauntingly?
The "Horse Soldiers" has a great scene where the rebs are marching along singing it loud, with ever louder and more emphasis on the "Hurrah"s.

Lynyrd Skynyrd do a great live rendition of 'Dixie'......or 'Sweet Home Alabama'.....could that count?

Just watching Glory now, and my earlier post may have been wrong. A scene does indeed have White Union musicians playing Bonnie Blue Flag, not in the 54th's camp, but as the 54th marches thru that other Union camp.
I think it is a terrific tune, much better than Dixie.

I'm pretty sure there was a Union version of the 'Bonnie Blue Flag' also.
Sincerely,
