Thomas was, no doubt, one of the most capable general officers on either side. That he doesn't have the press of others -- perhaps a self-inflicted handicap when he apparently altruistically avoided replacing Buell early in the war -- is an unfortunate reality. The hand he was dealt just didn't have enough high cards to take the pot.
