Default PPT Charge compared to Franklin

Winning at Gettysburg, would most likely have resulted in the Battle of Pipe Creek a few weeks later, If Lee felt like pushing his luck.
Hood was making a bid to turn the war in the west around. If he had won at Franklin and moved quickly he had a chance to drive Thomas from Nashville, this would have thoroughly disrupted Northern fortunes in the West And East (reinforcements would almost certainly have to be sent west and probably from Grants Army).
Classic example of Lee special pleading; Where Lee was, was the center of the war. While he was maneuvering between Washington D.C. and Richmond for 3 years, the war was being lost in the West.

Thank you Sir! This is a very good map and somewhat contemporary to boot! Also it is one of the few I've seen that identify federal regiments on the main line of battle. Actually this map has a note to the effect that the headquartes of Gen. Wilson are off the map to the right. That's actually what I'm looking for. GG Grandpa Cockerham was a farrier under Edward Hatch and I suspect was at that headquarters or close by during the battle. I think the location was a place called Matthew's Farm reportedly 2.5 miles east of town along the Murfreesboro Pike. My other GG Grandpa at the battle was with the 63rd VA under S.D. Lee and arrived too late in the day to be pressed into battle hence were on guard duty. Lucky for me. This Confederate had been wounded in Atlanta and was probably not effective. His reward was being thrust in the middle of the rear guard about three weeks later between Columbia, TN and the Tennessee River at Bainbridge, AL.

Putting it that way, I guess your right. It just gets so personal at the time...I try to put myself in a CW Sgts position...man, that must have been hard...so many casulties...so little room for manuever, no communications, no air, no arty as we know it....can you imagine? I really get a deep gut wrenching feeling for those guys...magnificent mortals, one and all...blue and gray....its hard enough now, let alone then...Thanks for your response. Semper Fi. Leigh
