Ship's Log

How often are they sent ashore for storage and a fresh one started? I'm asking because I'm interested in a monitor that was sunk off of Charleston.

Can't be sure, but my understanding is that a log was for a specific voyage -- a fresh one was started at the beginning of a new voyage or mission.
