"Cump" was the name Sherman's family called him, from his "middle" name Tecumseh.

Cump's only name was Tecumseh until he was about 9, when he was adopted by the Ewings. Not only had he never been baptized (horrors!!) but he didn't have a proper Christian name. The priest who baptized him named him William.
