There's been some talk about an informal gathering of CW fruitcakes at Shiloh on the last weekend in October. Any takers?

Sounds like a definite maybe. The draw would be, of course, the battlefield. But the idea of visiting it with a half-dozen or so genuine CW freaks does have its appeal.
Most have already squandered their allotted vacation time, so it looks like it will be much too short. For me, it's a 9-hour drive -- 11 if I take the camper, but it could develop into one of those spontaneous experiences that sometimes move in and out of our lives.
PM me for details.

Don't complain about an eleven hour drive. It'll take me three to four just to get out of the state into Nevada. All the battlefields are back east & midwest and here I am, on the coast a few miles away from Fort Point.
Complain? When you slide into the Pacific, then I'll complain. Here in the hinterlands distance is measured in time. It's not 20 miles to there, it's about a half-hour. Where my wife works is less than 10 minutes. Where I used to work was close to an hour. My physician is just up the road a coupla minutes.
Shiloh is 9 hours. I have no idea how many miles there are. Nine hours is 3 potty stops and a coffee break.
Although Illinois is no nirvana for a CW freak, Caleeforneea must be at the edge of the earth. Go east, young man. Go east.

Ole, I go east every chance I get. Been to the National Archives for about a week this year and spent about two days in the Library of Congress during another trip. I plan to do more research at the Virginia Historical Society as well as the Virginia State Library later this week. I can't wait to retire so I can spend half my time doing research on the East Coast.
The State of Tennessee has provided excellent paper and electronic tourist information for years. I "subscribe" to their notices and today got a link to this one, titled "Tennessee Historic Places and Museums". Page 2 includes a link to Civl War sites. Once there, you can select a region of the state to browse. The brochure even conveniently offers you a small view for dial-up users and a large view for broadband users.
I've found Tennessee's materials to be superior to most states' the last few years.
Somewhere back then, Tennessee did indeed recognize a need to preserve it's dubious gift of battlefields and has kept faith with the memory of her sons in one way or another by preserving, as much as possible, the battlefields. A marvelous state, by the way. If it had a real winter, I'd consider moving down there when dear one retires.

Ole, it is funny that you mention that we midwesterners measure travel by time and not miles. I have been questioned more than once by out of staters and my answer has pretty much been...see that (Sears) tower? It's only about 35 mi away but it's a good 45 mins on somedays and 2hrs the next. Distance means very little around here and that is just considering traffic and not necessarily construction!
