Do you have a source for this? While I am aware of some very limited examples of such I have seen no evidence that this was a CS sponsored or supported event.

Braggs men poisoned every well they got near in Ky & TN when they withdrew... but the purposeful spread of the pox... very limited and the sources I have seen are questionable.

No, I don't know that the Confederates infected people with blankets contaminated with smallpox. I've heard there were rumors. Do you have some proof that this actually happened? How could this happen? Did the Rebs make gifts of blankets to the Yanks?

The Confederates contaminated streams in a temporary way by leaving an animal carcass in them. It's hardly like they dropped arsenic into it. And I can't agree with you that it was worse than Sherman's march. My opinion on the smallpox blankets is out pending some kind of reputable proof.

Yikes!

All these bad, bad people.

Well there was a war going on, and each side tried to be badder than the other. So are we to judge which side was badder than the other?

Both sides did, mostly as exception, did resort to some unsavory behavior.

This is the nature of war, (noticed any news of misbehavior by our boys in Iraq?)

One can't brush all with the same brush. It was rarely institutionalized, although i would admit that there was some more latitude of conduct in South Carolina. (AQnd who culd blame these soldiers who would be happy and safe at home but for SouthCarolina's lead into the war.

Well satisfaction is a relative thing, but i am unaware of R E Lee ordering civilians/non combatants to be targetted, in the same manner as occurred with the adoption of the Lieber code, ie collective punishment, ethnic cleansing, summary execution and so on.

Nothing to do with Lee, but anyway.

Mil law requires the payment for items taken, or script, which is re payed by the CSA Government upon recipt of.

I never sad it had anything to do w/ Lee. But since they were some of Sherman's men and this is a thread about Sherman...

The destruction of an enemy economy can be viewed as an act of war; and breaking open banks to pay for things w/ CS paper money... fits the midwestern sense of humor & irony as Ole so aptly pointed out...

The CS govt never repaid any script... I'm not certain there is evidence they intended to.

Are you suggesting Lee was unaware of the tiny incident at Chambersburg? Lee was unaware of Braggs order to poison every well as his Army retreated from Kentucky (which in at least one occasion included the use of Union POWs... alive or dead when they hit the water... I don't want to know.)

THe history of the 2nd MN VI mentions the poisoning of wells as does the memoir of Genl Beatty and several other texts

Default Didn't mean to offend

Sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't mean to imply that all Southerners were the characteristics you have been naming. Now that I am being questioned however about my sources, I am gathering them and will return with an abundance. Have a great day!

Now. I'm going to be busted to cadet or, at least, banned forever for this, but the word, "dolt" rattles around in the empty spaces. It has settled.
