I can and do deny that NBF founded the KKK. I am curious as to what you base your belief on that Forrest, himself, likely killed many blacks.

It's been an ongoing battle for Southern heritage defenders to keep the Klan distanced from them. People see the Klan with a battleflag and automatically categorize them in with all Southerners who support the flag.
The 37th actions are to be placed in the roles among such small voices as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and so many others whose voices pass unnoticed unless a rock is thrown or a pate is cracked. It is from such small voices that great movements begin.

From my own limited perception, more of the type of the 37th "protest" should have been done long ago to disassociate the grayback from the racist. Ideally, the first guy who waved the CBF at an anti-integration rally should have been stomped into a bloody smear of snot. That opportunity was missed. Now it's an uphill battle for groups like the 37th to try to regain that ground.

Rally behind the 37th Texas! Get 'er done!
Ole

Default N.B. Forrest I

The original militia group called the klan was founded by six gentlemen from Pulaski, Tennessee whose identities have long since been known. Nathan Bedford Forrest was in Memphis at the time recovering from four long years of warfare. General Forrest was exhonerated by Congress for all actions he took in combat. Forrest shot lots of folks in combat, most of whom deserved it. His attitude toward Black folks is well documented. He was in fact one of the first civil rights activists. It is reported that 2,000 Blacks came to his funeral, not to cheer, but in sincere mourning. He was their friend. Ten years ago, I too, was skeptical of Forrest. After MUCH research, I have no problem defending the contribution of this man to the Civil War. His family left much on the battlefield, a loss matched by few in this war. May this man never be confused with his grandson.

Folks interested in Southern heritage don't defend it. They celebrate it and make an attempt to keep at least one true version of history alive for future generations to judge.

Default 37th Tx

Folks,

Just a quick note about the reaction to the proposed counter demonstration by the 37th Tx. I posted the same information on another ACW forum and was amazed to find that the majority of the responders felt that the 37th's actions were not only unworthy of note, but most felt that the website of this organization (www.37thtexas.org) promoted "neo-confederate garbage" and that the demonstration was an attempt to promote their beliefs beyond the website.

I have always admired the passion that most posters have for the events and people involved in the struggles of the 19th century, but am also frequently amazed that the study of those same events and people can result in a close-minded stubborness and fanatical partisanship.

Thank you to all the posters for having the the ability to put aside their regional affiliations to see this event for what it appears to be.

Some days I am still proud to be an American,
TomH

Neo-confederate garbage aside, the protest is the right thing to do. The symbolism of representatives of the South turning their backs on the Klan speaks louder than bricks and chanting.

I agree with you, Ole. Some of the SCV's take the position that it is beneath their dignity to even acknowledge the Klan. They think ignoring them is the best policy. Personally, I think if voices of opposition to the Klan's use of the battleflag are not heard that people will assume the silence means approval.

Rose

Tomh, I visited the website and I didn't see any neo-Confederate (whatever exactly that is) garbage. I saw a website filled with Southern pride. It's probably true that the 37th's agenda is to promote pride in Southern heritage and why shouldn't they? However, it doesn't surprise me that the majority of responders on the forum you speak of reacted negatively to the 37th's efforts. I know there are partisan extremists, on both sides, that see only negativity in the other side.

Regards,
Rose

I'd learn to ride a horse for the chance to turn my back on those freaks.

They (the KKK) can say what they want, I have the right to ignore them.
