In a lecture by Professor

The Papers of U.S. Grant Recorded at the Smithsonian Institution on November 9, 1998
Simon addresses the site of the surrender:
Arrangements are made to meet to discuss terms. The closest location is Chicken Town. Fortunately for history, they move to the next larger town of Appomattox Court House.

This is a very interesting address as he mentions such tidbits as the fact that Longstreet was a cousin of Julia Grant, and that Julia had sometimes said to Grant "I hope you don't hurt Longstreet!"; and that just the day after the surrender a rebel private soldier aproached Grant introducing himself saying "I'm your aunt Rachel's son, Charley." Grant said "Bad business, Charlie!". etc., etc.
