One cannot step on what remains of that battlefield and close their eyes and not see these brief stories come to life.
Or the the story of Tod Carter:
After being opereated on Dec. 1 by the Dr. Deering Roberts for while two young nieces, Alice Adelaide McPhail (age 11) and little Lena Carter (age 8), assisted by holding a candle and a small lamp, the only light available in the early morning darkness. He died December 2nd at the at th of 24. Seldom in the perils of war has a soldier been found on the battlefield by members of his own family, having been directed to the place where he fell by his own commanding general, to be carried from the field into his own home, to die beneath the roof of the house where he was born, surrounded by his own loved ones--for many a Confederate soldier's bones were left to bleach on the field where he fell.
