I am curious. Has anyone poled this forum's members about which Civil War battle they considered the very worst? Rufus Dawes visited every battlesite he fought at after the war. But he could not get himself to go back to one of them....Antietam. He said it had just been to horrible to recollect. Considering the battles the 6th Wisconsin had been in..this speaks volumes

Our splendid regiment is almost destroyed. We have had nearly 400 men killed and wounded in the battles. Seven of our officers were shot and three killed in yesterday's battle and nearly 150 men killed and wounded. All from less than 300 engaged. The men have stood like iron....Maj. Franklin actually was probably worse than Gettysburg; but I still avow that Antietam was the mother of all slaughters. Keep it comin' folks

Cold Harbor was horrific. The loss of life in a small space of time was probably the most intense of the war. But it was a very short battle (praise be). I also have to throw in Fredricksburg; but Antietam.....Lord almighty

Obviously there is no "worst" but Allatoona Pass would have to be on the list...proportionally one of the bloodiest, and perhaps the bloodiest, battle of the war.
Griswoldville would make my list...young men and old boys getting shot down in suicidal attacks
