Wow, Steven! Your case for making a movie about Franklin is irresistible. If we were to run a betting pool, that would be my choice as the basis for the next WBTS movie coming out, if there EVER is going to be one in this decade.
Regarding Franklyn, I think Howard Bahr's novel the Black Flower about the battle would be great put on film.
I'd also like to see on on Fredricksburg alone and Sharpsburg, perhaps Shiloh. Then for us Naval buffs we have to have one on Semmes and his tenure on the Alabama.
There are numerous subjects I'd like to see covered. The problem is we Civil War buffs are way outnumbered by the ordinary movie goer who is the one buying most of the tickets and not interested in the Civil War.
Personally, of all the Civil War movies out there, I can honestly say that my favorite one is a piece of Gods and Generals. I loved the job they did on Fredricksburg, that was the best part of the whole movie except that they neglected to show the Richard Rowland Kirkland Incident at the stone wall. I thought excluding that was a serious mistake. Even my wife who has grown to appreciate the Civil War through 35 years of osmosis with me was disappointed in Kirkland being left out.

I was a 'genuine' "actor" of this 1980's miniseries alled North and South & North And South art two! (I think this is the miniseries you are referring to) Yep, I was a re-enactor, hehehe! :-)
N & S pt. 2 was very fun to film! I can be seen a few times according to friends. The Henry House Hill episode, where the house was blownup, found me ducking as chunks of the house came raining down directly behind us! I can be seen firing my Enfield at a Yank and reloading, while crossing the big field at First Manassas (Bull Run) scene. My Enfield sounds like kaboom-wah, and I immediately reach for my cartridge box. I also carried the 15th Alabama colors which can be discerned real well; it looks just like my icon flag on CWT minus the stars.
I was only kidding with the first line above & "whoa." The movie compared to these today, was pretty marginal. But..we ploughed new ground in CW movies by appearing in Jarnigan clothing & not Hollywood costumes. Also our Hardee tactics were correct. We tried!
Sockknitter, you get my vote.. BTW the Anv. is only 15 days away..
Not to long ago the war in Iraq surpassed the 2000 kia mark. There was close 2000 confederate dead on the field at franklin in just over 5 hrs of fighting.. Oh what a horrible sight it must have been.
Bill you are correct the Black flower would make a wonderfull movie.. except for one part of the book that i didnt care for "where a young boy met his end by a worthless peice of trash."
regards, Steven

Yes, it was. It's the movie starring Patrick Swayze as Gen. Ory Mane & George Reade as Gen. Hazzard. There was North and South, then North and South Part 2. Part 2 covered the war and early post-war periods. A third movie covered the Indian wars on to the 1900's. N & S pt. 2 was the first large-scale production including CS & US soldiers in their re-enactors uniforms instead of Hollywood unauthentic costumes. The maching, Napoleonic tatics and weapons were pretty well correct. The 'southern' accents really sucked! We assembled in Natchez, Mississippi in 1985 or '86, to film pt. 2.
Dear Rob,
I was actually thinking of an earlier series, Blue and Gray I think, with G. Peck as Lincoln and Lloyd Bridges as father of clan of Virginians. I think Warren Oates played a bad guy. There was an attempt there to be "historical" I know, and they had some scenes in Vicksburg with civilians butchering a horse for food.
Since you're a genuine actor, could I have your autograph? Could you introduce me to Kate Hudson? What's Harrison Ford really like?
In my CW movie, the Vicksburg caves would be a definite must!
Yes, "Blue & Gray" was an interesting movie. The Vicksburg scenes were most interesing and I do remember the 'CS officer loses horse to US artillery fire and starving civilians butcher it on the street, scene.' This (Vicksburg seige) is an interesting theme to build upon in future movies. The 'avenging CS officer who whistled 'Rock of Ages' while brutally hacking to death Union soldiers with his sabre, was a tad on the ridiculous side. This is where we rebs part company with Hollywood in "what makes a good CW movie" ideals. Perhaps you agree with us? We like to be portrayed noble & honest, good and bad, just like our northern foe are portrayed. However, this is only a thought with no personal malignment meant. ;-) With todays computer generated images and the Vicksburg or Atlanta campaign is a virtual goldmine in Hollywood ideas on CW movies. Vicksburg, Perryville, Chicamauga, Mission Ridge WITH Ringgold Gap :-), New Hope, Kennesaw Mt., and July 22 Atlanta...would do the trick, very well! Wouldn't you agree?
I'd be honoured to give you my autograph but it would ony be worth a friendship and not carry the same "weight" as a real movie actor. ;-) About 2,000 other **re-enactors** would oblige you too, as well. I'm sure! :-) (I know you were kidding as well as I ;-)
I did meet "real actors" George Reade & Patrick Swayze during N & S. pt. 2. Some of our regiment, 15th Alabama Infantry, met President Abraham Lincoln's actor & got him to sign five-dollar bills. I missed this opportunity.
I'll be glad to set you up with pretty Ms. Kate, BTW. ;-) Harrison is still caught-up as space cowboy, Hans Solo! I'll ask him to portray Gen. Gordon Granger, next time we meet! :-)
Matthew, have you visited Vicksburg National Battlefield Park? If not please make the effort. It's definitely worth the effort, take my word on that. Visit the gully which held many of the civilian caves if you go.
PS: forgot to add; I'm very bad on remembering actors/actresses names, sorry.)
Your Reb Pard!
Rob
