First, the war was on for nearly a year before he became the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. I suspect he held no such vain hope. He was a practical man and had seen the determination of the north at first hand. Others were still running in circles declaring that we should crush them quickly. And there's the southern boast that one southerner could whip 10 yanks. You're in high school, you've seen that sort of confidence up close.
