There was a re-enactment of the Grand Review held in Harrisburg, PA during the summer months two or three (or maybe four) years ago.

I know that the Harrisburg Patriot-News published articles about the original Grand Review, as well as the re-enactment.

As a first step, you could try writing to

The Patriot-News
P.O Box 2265
Harrisburg, PA 17105

and possibly someone could help you to find some of those articles.

Would it be possible to find newspaper reports of the event? I understand that newspapers of the day made much of Sherman's refusal to shake Stanton's hand. (Can't say as I blame Cump.)

During the passing of the armies, Sherman's men were as authentic as possible. They wore the same grubby uniforms, had foodstuffs slung over horses, milk and beef cows, etc. and several slave families trailing behind. Must have been quite a sight.

Part of the reason Shermans men made such a sight was that they had only partially received their clothing allowance after completeing a rather rigerous campaign. There were literally men all but naked riding in some of the wagons, others wearing trousers courtesy of the NC Quartermaster dept and there were quite a few who were barefoot. Those were the men who won the war and they new it.

They marched from Chatanooga to Atlanta to the sea to Washington DC for the Grand Review... anybody want to figure the mileage?
