While reading the threads, the very same thought came to mind. You beat me to it. It takes no more than an axe (and a man who knows how to swing it) to build a rude shelter. Did Lincoln's father, or any other pioneer, require a saw mill to build his cabin?

To carry this further, I believe I read that prisoners at one time had asked permission to cut trees and build shelters. They were denied. And in northern prisons it was inhumane to not provide adequate firewood to heat the barracks.

You don't often see the word "slave" in southern writing of the time. They were "servants," or "my people" or a few others that the PC police prohibits.
