BTW, at the George Rogers Clark Monument in Vicennes, IN, I met a re-enactor who played a surgeon (with French spelling) and he had all the tools including the dental tools.
I asked about one peculiar tool that had a folding hook. He explained that it was used to "snap" off the tooth. Knowing that the lower parts of the tooth would still be there, I asked about them and he showed me what looked like a gimlet (screw on the end of a T handle allen wrench) and said it was screwed into them and then yanked out.
As interesting as French-Indian, American Revolution and the Civil War eras are, I'm grateful for novacaine, pain-less dentistry and modern medicine.
BTW, the military medical college in Washington, D.C. is suppose to have the bullet that killed Lincoln on display. Have to visit it next February.
