I got these from a quick look at www.dogpile.com and www.google.com
Did not find the surname Moonlight listed at Genforum, but believe you can get his surname registered there, so you can try to reach others with some knowledge or him, or like you, searching for info.

Grandad,

The Kansas Historical Society in Topeka, has quite a bit of information on
Col. Moonlight. Unfortunately, they do not circulate their materials, nor do they do research for individuals. If you can visit Topeka or have a friend or relative make the trip, I am sure that you will find it rewarding. The Kansas Adjutant General’s Office has a short bio on line; he was the 13th Adjutant General of Kansas Jan. 1883-Jan. 1885. There is also information on him at the Kansas National Guard Museum also in Topeka. There are several Kansas history websites that contain information on him, for that matter several Missouri history sites also. Run a search using Civil War + Thomas Moonlight.

I haven’t seen a biography of him, but there are several works about the 11th Kansas. There is also an official history of the 11th written after the war. It is in the collection of the Kansas Historical Society and I believe that reprints are available. You also might want to search on Lane’s brigade, and General Jim Lane.

Thomas started the Civil War by raising a light artillery battery and served as it’s Captain in 1861. He was elected Lt. Col. of the 11th Kansas when it was raised as part of Lane’s Brigade in the summer of 1862. He eventually became Col. of the Regiment. He was in command of a Brigade, which included the 11th Kansas at the Battles of Westport and Mine Creek in October of 1864. The Mine Creek Historical Society is a great resource.

Col. Moonlight was an important figure in Kansas History and you should be able to a lot if information.

Good Hunting,

Howdy,
Am collecting information on Moonlight in mind for a biography.
He was at the Mine Creek Battle, as Liver Eating Johnston was at a time.
I am finishing my bio on Johnston this year. He was with the 2nd Colorado.

June 3, 1865--6 p.m.
Lieutenant-General GRANT:
Following dispatch from General Dodge just received:
FORT LEAVENWORTH, June 3, 1865.
Major-General POPE:
General Moonlight, with one column of cavalry and pack-mules, left for Powder River May 10. He reports that the Cheyennes seem to be breaking up into small parties. Two hundred lodges are trying to make their way south by the mountains. Troops are after this party. The Sioux, except 230 lodges, are in Black Hills; want to come in and treat. Little Thunder and Spotted Tail are at Laramie; do not deny that they have engaged in the troubles; say they were forced to it by Cheyennes. The Sioux all seem anxious to treat. Connor is evidently making every effort to carry out your instructions.

For full details of this battle of Lexington I respectfully refer you to the report of General Blunt, who was in command, and to the reports of his subordinate commanders, Colonels Jennison and Moonlight, and also Hon. Senator Lane, of my volunteer staff, who accompanied and participated in this first conflict between my forces and the enemy. General Blunt, as directed by me, fell back to my headquarters at Independence, leaving Colonel Moonlight, who had covered the retreat, to remain as a picket at the Little Blue, with arrangements to burn the bridge on the approach of the enemy to embarrass his progress.

HEADQUARTERS DISTRICT OF THE PLAINS,

Maj. Gen. G. M. DODGE,
Department of the Missouri, Saint Louis, Mo.:
I can relieve Eleventh Kansas when Stagg's brigade arrives. Colonel Moonlight is on way to Kearny, suspended from command. I have ordered him mustered out. His administration here was a series of blunders. Colonel Cole passed Columbus yesterday; is getting along finely. He will probably meet surveyors. Colonel Kidd's regiment (Sixth Michigan) arrived at Kearny yesterday. Have ordered him here. Stagg is two days east of Kearny. Cannot possibly move without rations. Have sent an officer to hurry them up. Have also ordered rations from Kearny and Cottonwood and all subsistence trains bound for Denver and Julesburg to this post. I may be able to get away in ten days. The mail stages west of Denver have again been stopped by Indians. I leave for Camp Collins in the morning to see about it. I have six companies of cavalry at Collins and Halleck, and Utah troops are guarding line on Bitter Creek. Will start the stages again immediately.
P. EDW. CONNOR,
Brigadier-General.
----------------------------------------------------
But as you may note on the very top of this post--apparently others thought different of Brig. General P. E. Connor; as Moonlight is listed as a General - maybe a Brevet but, I cannot confirm eitherway.

Hope this helps your quest in researching Thomas Moonlight.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
M. E. Wolf

Hi,
montealto here. Just joined up. Interested in researching Thomas Moonlight too. I live in Fife, Scotland, not too far from where he was born, in the little village of St. Vigeans, near Arbroath. For anyone thinking about a biography, that sounds great. I would just like to set one thing straight. Most articles written on Tom Moonlight states his date of birth as 10 November 1833. This. I believe is also the date on his headstone in Mount Muncie cemetery, in Leavenworth, Kansas. However, birth records over here indicate he was Christened on 30 September 1833.
As he ran away from home at around 13 years old and never returned to his native land, it's not surprising he got his birthdate wrong.
