Neil,

No. Not at all. I just am pointing out as a 'symbol of racism' the US flag is equally as guilty, if not more, than the CBF. Yet one is labeled as nothing more and banned from schools, football games, critisized rounded whenever it is seen outside a home. Seems like a very powerful double standard. A dangerous one.

I have not heard complaints of the US flag being used by Klans.

Tommy,

You miss my point. Yes, the American flag has been misused by elements not supportive of it, the American Nazi Party, the KKK, etc.

My point it, the people via the Federal government have fought those who misuse it, like President Grant and the Congress of 1871.

It has, on the other hand, my impression that the Confederate Battle flag was 'surrendered' without a struggle by the majority of the people in the South to the KKK in 1960 when it came out against the Civil Rights campaign.

And some of the flags in the South only began using the CBF or incoperating it into their state flags as a result of the Supreme Courts actions to enforce intergration and the like. Instead of being associated as a historical relic to honor Confederate soldiers, it was surrendered without protest to those elements that are now associated with racism.

Unless, in all honesty, you can point me to some actions of Southerners who, at that time in history, protested the CBF being used by hate groups and racists.

I know that this is a bit off topic but is this something that is only happening in my state, Alabama, or is it happening elsewhere?

I have noticed that in large discount stores such as WalMart, etc. the only type flags you can find are the flag of the United States and those seasonal flags that you put out for ornamental purposes, etc.

Why wouldn't everyone be proud to have their state flag as well as the flag of their country?

I have had on more than one occasion (due to old age, etc.) to order state flags from a company specializing in things like this.

At first I thought well, maybe it's because of the way the Alabama flag looks. Little children might actually think it meant the Red Cross! <grin> But then on second thought I wanted to ask this group if you ordinarily see your state flags for sale in any stores that you frequent?

Thea,

Ohio State Flags are sold in the flag store in town here with no trouble and I see a few flying from the flag poles in the yards and such. Haven't heard of it being much of a problem to find one.

Tennesse flags which look a bit Civil warish with the stars on the red background are readily available and are flown in lots of yards and on most public buildings. Yes, we sneak in the stars and bars (first national) also with little fanfare. Our Winstead hill site flies the southern cross with little comment. It's on a thirty foot pole with no rope as a challenge to the kids.

I have had no success locally with the purchase of a 35 star flag. (Yes, I do have some yankee ancestors of whom I'm just a proud as the boys who wore gray.)

Larry,

You can find that flag (35 star) by searching the web or find a guy who hand paints them on silk. $1,600 - $3,000 for the national, depending on who paints it for you. A nylon repro is much, MUCH cheaper.

THea, a friend of mine who collects state flags just came home from Mobile, he mentioned picking up an Alabama State Flag in the Montgomery area. Not sure where he picked it up.

I don't have a dog in this fight. You all do what pleases you. It's not my business whether SC or whomever flies whatever flag. I can have an opinion, but it means zip.

Go for it. I'll be somewhere in the background saying, "Go for it."

I think ya'll are missing my point. So far it's been mentioned "where" state flags can be found. My point is this: If seasonal flags and the United States flag are readily available in stores that you frequent often, do any of you notice if your own state flag is as readily available, without having to go to a specialty shop?
