Well, it seems that there have been a few arguments about the Deaths of Generals at Gettysburg. Specifically on July 2nd.

This was all brought on by my Trivia question on Saturday November 10th.

My source says that only one general actually died on the 2nd, General Stephen H. Weed. Others may have sustained wounds on the 2nd, like Zook & Barksdale, did not die till the following day.

What is your take on this subject? Do you have a source that contradicts my source?

Mike

The middle volume of Shelby Foote's 3-volume history of the Civil War indicates that General Paul Semmes, brother of Confederate naval hero Raphael Semmes, died on July 2.

I thought it had also said Barksdale died on that day, but in re-reading it, I see that, although it says that Lee lost Barksdale's services forever on July 2, it also points out that Barksdale lingered until the following day.

Did some additional research and found that the civilwarhistory website indicates that Semmes, like Barksdale, received a mortal wound on July 2 but did not die on that date. In fact, Semmes didn't die until the 10th.
