The link doesn't work for me.

Did they give a list that you had to choose from, or did they throw it open for anybody to name any five people of their choice?

I nominated the extremely flawed but oh so very heroic Audie Murphy. In the biggest war the world has ever seen, he is ‘credited’ with being the most heroic. I also nominated the second most decorated soldier of that war, Maurice Britt. I then nominated Robert E Lee, Dwight Eisenhower (toss up between him and MacArthur) and to show how seriously I take such polls, I nominated myself.

On a more serious note. It is quite hard to find only five. Though it is telling that most are 19th century figures.

Five Great Americans

George Washington (for being the first President and not becoming a king)
Abraham Lincoln (Emancipation Proclomation and keeping the United States)
Theodore Roosevelt (For preparing us for the 20th Century)
Edison... (one of our most prolific inventors)
Martin Luther King... nuff said

NOte that I didn't include any women...

5 Great Women

Mary Mcloud Bethun (sp?) for her pioneering education movements
Clara Barton (for founding the US Red Cross and her work to get women the vote)
Condalisa Rice (a woman who has attained the most powerful position in the country next to the President)
The Ladies of Seneca Falls... hehehe good trivia question
Nellie Blithe... for showing the world what a woman could do if she set her mind to it.

5 Great American military men

Eisenhower (a good President and a great General)
Grant (A superb General and an underrated President)
Upton (the greatest military reformer of the 19th century)
Geranimo (does anyone need to ask)
Collin Powell (Great soldier and a great political appointee)

It is difficult to narrow it down to five, but:

5 Great Men:

Harry S. Truman
Robert E. Lee
Henry Ford
Carl Sagan
Walt Disney

5 Great Women:

Harper Lee (for giving the world "To Kill a Mockingbird")
Amelia Earhart (for showing women that they could fly, literally)
Katherine Hepburn (for showing women that they could wear pants)
Annie Oakley (for showing women that they could shoot and ride)
Abigail Adams (writer, patriot, abolitionist, early feminist...extraordinary woman of her time)
