"The Federals procured a car-frame, which they placed on wheels, loading it with cotton bales." So, what is a car-frame is Civil War venacular? I initially thought it could be a rail car, but rail cars already have wheels.
I'd bet that they are talking about a box car... The railrods would often dismount a box car from it's wheels and place it on the wayside as a generic use building.
