I have recently found info on my GGGrandfather's Civil War history,He served with the 5th West Va Inf. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Lynchburg Va June 18 1864, and sent to a prison in Richmond
I am interested in finding out which prison he was sent to, if that is posible, and any info on the Battle ( I sadly don't know much about this particular battle myself) Can anyone help ?
Thanks

There is some information here on this website.

If you go to the Resource Center, under "Battles and Campaigns," click on "Full Battle Summaries by State," click on "VA," and click on "Lynchburg" for a brief description of the battle.

I note that the summary indicates a total of 44,000 troops involved and only 900 casualties, so the casualty rate was relatively low. Your GGGrandfather was unlucky that day.

I can't tell you anything about which prison captured soldiers might have been sent to, but I can tell you a little about the ultimate significance of the battle.

After the battle, which the Confederates won, Union General Hunter withdrew into West Virginia. Unfortunately, he neglected to send word to the Union high command that he had done so. Thus, the Union high command continued to believe that Hunter was protecting the Shenandoah Valley against any Confederate advance, while in fact, the Valley was wide open for Early to move virtually unopposed. Early mounted an expedition designed to capture Washington, DC, and actually came fairly close to succeeding.

You can read more about what happened after Lynchburg in a thread I started a while back. Go to Eastern Theater Discussions and look for a thread titled "The third Confederate advance north of Virginia..." I believe the most recent post in that thread is dated 5/26/04.

Most likely if he was an officer he wound up at Libby or Castle Thunder. If he was enlisted Belle Isle in the James River is most probable.

You may want to contact the Richmond Battlefield National Park Site at their Chimborazo Medical Museum. They may have information. Chimborazo is the HQ for that area.

I have recently joined a living history regiment and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on quality sutlers to use reasonably priced.

Hello, Jerry, and welcome to Civil War Talk.

There are a number of veteran re-enactors on this board (unfortunately, I'm not one of them) who know a lot about what kind of stuff to get and where to get it. However, I'm not sure that your post here on the Civil War History Chat - General Discussions board will catch their attention.

If you don't get a response soon, try clicking on the Poke Sack and then clicking on Reenactors Forum. If you start a thread there and indicate that you're looking for a good sutler, somebody can probably help you.
