There is some information here on this website.
If you go to the Resource Center, under "Battles and Campaigns," click on "Full Battle Summaries by State," click on "VA," and click on "Lynchburg" for a brief description of the battle.
I note that the summary indicates a total of 44,000 troops involved and only 900 casualties, so the casualty rate was relatively low. Your GGGrandfather was unlucky that day.
I can't tell you anything about which prison captured soldiers might have been sent to, but I can tell you a little about the ultimate significance of the battle.
After the battle, which the Confederates won, Union General Hunter withdrew into West Virginia. Unfortunately, he neglected to send word to the Union high command that he had done so. Thus, the Union high command continued to believe that Hunter was protecting the Shenandoah Valley against any Confederate advance, while in fact, the Valley was wide open for Early to move virtually unopposed. Early mounted an expedition designed to capture Washington, DC, and actually came fairly close to succeeding.
You can read more about what happened after Lynchburg in a thread I started a while back. Go to Eastern Theater Discussions and look for a thread titled "The third Confederate advance north of Virginia..." I believe the most recent post in that thread is dated 5/26/04. |
