I'm reading The South Was Right by James and Walter Kennedy. I think they make a lot of good points if you have a open mind. I don't want to start a North and South fight on this topic but I would like your thoughts on the book. Neil, I know you are a die hard yank but I Would like your opinion on this book. I like your posts and respect your views.

Martin,

I have read the book and I suggest you check some of the points and so-called 'facts' listed by the authors and prepare to be disappointed. The Kennedy brothers are NOT historians presenting history, they are pushing a modern-day agenda, in my humble opinion, and doing a bad job of it. Check out the following web site.

http://www.polyticks.com/CW/half_right.htm

Please go to any respected historian who has a book in print, even those who do not agree with my own personal views, and you will find much better research, notes and documentation than this book will ever have.

I will also encourage you to read opinions and views you do not personally agree with so at the very least you can understand where other folks are coming from, hence my own reason for reading this book myself. You never know where the next bit of truth may come from and smack you in the face.

Sincerely,
Unionblue

Martin,

You post here with (to me) a young, flexible, inquisitive mind, eager to learn and always willing to listen. Please take that way.

Your Friend,

Mr. Hamilton,

The Kennedys are my cousins and I know them well. I have eaten dinner with them on several occasions and they know me by my first name. I beleive they are right on virtually all counts.

Mr. Curtis,

You are entitled to your opinion and I am sure you know your cousins very well. I believe they are wrong on virtually all counts. That does not mean I think that they are bad people or evil. It is just my own, personal, belief.

By-the-way, did you check out the web site I gave above on a review of the book? I'd be curious as to your reactions to it.

Sincerely,
Unionblue

I do wonder, are there any other books on the subject of who was right?

Casey,

On the subject of the Civil War, pick a topic or subject and you are bound to find a book about it!

You may want to read the following to get you started on the 'who was right' angle.

The Origins of The American Civil War, by Brian Holden Reid.
The Causes Of The Civil War, Edited by Kenneth M. Stamp.
Why The Civil War Came, by Gabor S. Boritt.
Why The North Won The Civil War, Edited by David Herbert Donald.

The above books will give you a base of ideas, not all of them following my own reasons for the war, slavery, but includes other possible causes, such as the tariff, sectionalism, etc.

Enjoy your reading!
