A SAD UNDERTAKING

A ranking official of the Post Office died and the next day a job applicant waylaid President Lincoln in the White House.

"Mr. President, did you know that the Chief Postal Inspector just died. Can I take his place?"

"Well," drawled Lincoln, "it's all right with me if it's all right with the undertaker."

(And you would be surprised at just how little things have changed in applying for a job with today's Postal Service!)

From Germany came a letter applauding Lincoln's reelection in November 1864:

We congratulate you on your re-election by the American people. If resistance to slave power was the watchword of your first election in 1860, the triumphal war cry of your re-election is death to slavery.

The letter was signed by Karl Marx, who had recently published Das Kapital.
