Gary, there was agitation for the right to vote for women in the 1850's and although no scholar of feminism, I would think Julia was not the first woman propagandist in America. Harriet Tubman and other women, white and black, were active on the lecture circuits denouncing slavery well before Ms. Howe.

Thea,

Who passed the email to you? Was it from an organization or a person? And could you find out where this comes from for me? There is much I do not agree with in the email you have presented, but knowing the source can usually tell me how it came about and how serious to take it.

Thanks,
Unionblue

Their goal was a trifecta. Free slaves, Women's suffrage and Prohibition of alcohol. They were masters at manipulation.

Two out of three ain't bad... To accomplish any of those in 1860 they had better be masters at manipulation or they might find the end of their days w/ a short drop and a sudden stop.

Regarding the first female propagandist: you good people seem to have forgotten Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Alphabilly, who is the "they" who were the masters of manipulation? And why is female suffrage such a bad idea? (I'll not mention the other points, since emancipation seems to be a bad word here, and prohibition has been tried without success.)

Aphillbilly, do you agree with the trifecta or disagree? You would have won if you had bet on it.

Zou,

Aw c'mon Zou. Where did I say women's suffrage was a bad thing? Have I ever even alluded that it was? (my ex wife notwithstanding)
If so I will gladly edit it out. I merely pointed out they were masters of manipulation. And they were.

I will relate something. I recall watching the "The Man Show." On it, the two hosts set up a table and were asking women to sign the petition to end women’s suffrage. It was hilarious and sad at the same time. Women were signing it willingly even when a man (not a woman btw) nearby was virtually screaming they were being made fools of.

As to “they,” well.... “they” were too many and varied to list here. The suffrage movement felt prohibition was crucial to controlling men, (Abigail Duniway) there were countless groups at this time wanting to do away with slavery, booze and for women’s suffrage and become a socialist society etc etc.

http://womenshistory.about.com/libra..._watr_ch04.htm

Personally I do not have a problem with any of these. Including prohibition. I don’t drink so I’d like, no...LOVE to see my preferences held as a standard for everyone.

As to emancipation of slavery. I have never considered it a bad word. Ever.

On another thread long ago I posted my anti slavery links. Ones that fight slavery today. I have actively done ALL I could. I mean that. I have tried HERE to get people active. I have listed statistics, I have told what I have attempted to do to help stop it.

One issue I always get annoyed with ( I am not referring to you Zou) is when Yankees take a moral high ground about slavery 140 years ago but munch away on a Hershey bar. I will only eat Fair Trade chocolate and since you pretty much cannot get it here in the US I do not eat cocoa products. UK, Canada, Germany, France...you can easily get Fair Trade products......Slavery free...not in the moral US though..... There are currently more slaves today than there were in the entire 300 year slave trade combined. Over 30k slaves in US alone. According to US Labor Board statistics. (Trust me on this, please)

So Emancipation is not a bad word that I know of.
Never has been.

But emancipation 140 years ago means a lot less to me than it does right now.

As Always

All three goals were accomplished, one of them only temporarily, but being enacted into law would be enough to win the trifecta.

Sounds like a call for America to be the worlds policeman. Not that I object, I favor it, but sometimes I am surprised by who my bed fellows are.
