You're right, they are pretty slow, pretty quick back to DC after 1st Bull Run though!

You would actually think that having smaller corps would make the organization more flexible and hence easier to move.

Could it be as simple as the Union army has more stuff to bring along?

The smaller corps thing was the idea but in practice it lead to more beuracracy between the corps. Arguing over who had precedence to use what road first and so forth. In the long run I think it impeded movement more than anything. And yea, I would be willing to bet they had way more baggage to carry as well, which would tend to slow it down even more.

When Burnside had the 'Grand Divisions' did the Grand Divisions move any quicker than the smaller corps formations?
