Ventilation was very much a problem in that tunnel. And the solution was a brilliant stroke of invention. I still am boggled with the solution of building a fire to draw in fresh air.
And, yes, the Confederates became aware that digging was going on very nearly under their feet. They did probe for it, but couldn't locate it. Apparently, there were no miners among them.
